JOB GOAL: To help students attain an optimum level of personal and social adjustment as they advance through the various stages of childhood and adolescence
RESPONSIBLE TO: Principal
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Possess and maintain a Kansas counseling or social work license
2. Hold a master's degree in a related field
3. Proficient in use of computers and basic computer programs including word processing, email, social media, etc.
4. Effective communication skills, both written and verbal
5. Experience working with children and/or youth in a counseling setting
4. Must be willing to be trained in areas deemed necessary
PHYSICAL CONDITIONS:
1. Prolonged sitting, standing, and walking
2. Prolonged periods of time viewing a computer screen
3. Repetitive motions
4. Physical exertion to manually move, pull, or push heavy objects or materials
5. Ability to lift and carry 30 pounds unassisted
6. Stooping, bending, reaching, kneeling, and turning
7. Occasional work in noisy, crowded, stressful environments with numerous interruptions
8. Driving skills and physical ability to operate motor vehicles
including ability to operate at night
9. Some travel required

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Support the district’s vision, mission, and values
2. Implement all policies and statutes as determined by various governmental agencies, the Kansas State Department of Education, and the local board of education
3. Utilize appropriate strategies in disseminating information on the role and function of the counselor
4. Develop and utilize appropriate strategies for integrating other school personnel into the counseling process.
5. Consult with community referral sources and uses these sources in assisting students in meeting their developmental needs
6. Use knowledge of individual and family development in assisting students
7. Demonstrate knowledge of effective strategies and methods in individual and group counseling
8. Use group guidance activities that meet the developmental needs of students in the educational, career, personal, and social aspects of the counseling program
9. Develop procedures for managing, interpreting, and disseminating data obtained through assessment and research
10. Use various theories of career development in the counseling process.
11. Collaborate and consult with other school personnel in assessing and meeting the needs of students
12. Utilize collaboration, coordination, and consultation in the team process
13. Articulate the role of a counselor in crisis intervention
14. Participate in the school improvement process through support of and involvement in curriculum planning, department committees, and staff development
15. Supervise students as assigned
16. Develop an atmosphere of respect, trust, interest, and enthusiasm within the school
17. Communicate openly and effectively with students, community, parents, staff, and administration
18. React to change productively, positively, and effectively
19. Work cooperatively and constructively with others within the organization
20. Promote positive working relationships with parents and patrons in the community
21. Attend professional meetings and serve as a member of various district level committees as required
22. Procure supplies and equipment following district defined purchasing/budget procedures
23. Keep abreast of local, state, and national trends and research by attending staff development conferences and reading professional literature
24. Perform other duties as required and/or assigned by the principal or other administrative staff
